Excellent Image, Sound, Features, and Value, April 7, 2013

Amazon has provided an extensive “Product Description” (taken from LG promotional literature) that outlines the myriad of features available on the LN5700 series of Smart TV’s that became available in early 2013. There is no point in reiterating that list of features, so my review will focus on customer experience.
* SET UP: It took no time at all for a non-geek like me to set up the TV and the internet features. As they say: just follow the instructions on the screen.
* IMAGE QUALITY: I spent considerable time in a local electronics stores searching for the best buy in 42 inch smart TV’s (needed to fit into a cabinet, therefore the size restrictions). While there I surveyed other sizes of TV’s just to get an idea of quality of different brands. My overall impression: LG offers great quality for a reasonable price. Indeed, their new LN5700 series is a great value throughout the line of sizes available (32″, 39″ 42″ 47″, 50″, and 55″). Sizes 42″ through 55″ have 120 Hz refresh rate, which along with LG’s TruMotion makes for great images during sports and action movies. The 32″ operates at 60 Hz refresh rate. It is unclear whether the 39″ is 60 Hz or 120 Hz – different sites give different information, and the LG site is not clear on this issue. The LED backlighting, the Picture Wizard II feature, and Full HD 1080p resolution provide an exceptional image (better than any of the other brands I compared to while in the store). Saturated (but not gaudy) colors, great contrast ratio, and sharp edge definition all contribute to a clear, crisp image. The LN5700 has good off angle viewing performance and still looks good at angles around 30 degrees off center, unlike so many TV’s that start to have the contrast degrade at 20 to 25 degrees. The screen is matte, rather than glossy to help reduce glare and reflections. There are a variety of pre-set color schemes you can chose from should you decide you like your images more vivid, etc.
* SOUND QUALITY: Many purchasers will run the sound through external speakers or sound bar, but even if you just want to use the build in speakers you will be pleased. The set of stereo speakers are ported to the back and to the bottom of the TV. This allows you to adjust the sound for wall-mounting or table-top standing. Add in the six available “sound mode” options and an equalizer, and the TV produces entirely acceptable sound even without add-on speakers.
* SMART TV: The CPU and GPU have been upgraded for 2013 in the LN5700 series making for rapid response in the multiple Smart TV / Internet features and for gamers. Reports are that the processor is 3 times faster than last years model, but I cannot make that direct comparison myself. The LN5700 has built-in WiFi, a built-in Web browser, and a wide range of Smart TV options including all the premium applications such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, You Tube, etc. No Amazon apps yet, but evidently they are planned for the near future. The Home Dashboard feature enables the TV to remember and list all the various applications you have downloaded and viewed on one convenient page. There is also a dedicated button on the remote to access it quickly. When you click on the Home option on the remote, displays a very thorough menu of options for Internet use, quick selections for some of the premium apps as well as a selection for just the Internet itself.
* INPUT/OUTPUT: At the side of the TV there are three HDMI connections (one labeled HDMI/ARC and one labeled HDMI/MHL) as well as three USB In ports. At the back of the TV there is an H/P Out port for headphones, an Optical Digital Audio Out port, and a set of Component cable / AV ports.
* REMOTE: The product information provided by Amazon makes it look like the LN5700 comes with “The Magic Remote with Voice Command”. Not true; the Magic Remote is optional, but it is evidently an option worth considering to speed up browsing and enhance Smart TV functions. Having said that, the remote that comes with the TV is fully functional and will be sufficient for most users (although it is not back-lit).
* DIMENSIONS: The dimensions listed by Amazon are incorrect. It looks like they are listing the dimensions of the box that contains the TV. Check the LG website for the actual dimensions of the TV that interests you.
* HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The LN5700 series from LG is a great bargain if you want a great TV with LED backlighting with a plethora of features and you are satisfied with a non-3D TV. If you are looking for a 3D TV, try the LA6200 series, which is the upscale LN5700.

NO AMAZON APP, April 13, 2013

I just bought this TV last night, so I don’t have a laundry list of complaints or compliments. HOWEVER – I do not have cable or satellite – I only do digital antennae and internet apps. This is TV #3 – #1 is a Vizio with apps, #2 is an LG older model – I use with Roku. I was looking for Vizio, as I love our Vizio…but decided to go with this LG model because

#1: similar price as vizio model we were looking at,
#2 it has built n apps, (as does Vizio)
#3 it has an internet browser (vizio does not),
#4 we just bought an LG sound bar, and liked that all the LG things can be linked together.
#5 1080/120hz (vizio model also had)

So, I’m thinking that the two items that were different – especially that it has a web browser – was worth the extra I spent for the LG. I really, really do like LG products – so it’s all good.

ONE MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME – NO AMAZON APP. I cannot access my instant videos that I watch through PRIME on this TV. I emailed LG and got a very fast response and here it is:
I absolutely understand your concern, and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. Amazon will be supported later on, there is no ETA on when the update is going to be available.

After looking at other forums online – this is basically the same response people have been getting since 2011. So, I’m not sure what’s going to happen.

Anyway – I really wish I had known this before purchasing – not sure if I would have made the same decision, since internet apps is how we watch TV, and all the current and new releases are on Amazon, and I already subscribe to it.

Thought you should know, in case accessing Prime is important to you too.

I love this TV, April 13, 2013

It’s only been out of the box for an hour, and I’m already convinced this was the right TV to buy. I’m one of those people who believe that if a product is designed right, I should never have to look at the manual. With the exception of putting the TV on the stand this has been true. The remote and the software work beautiful together.

The smart: while waiting for the cable modem to reboot, I clicked on settings, and the TV connected to my wireless network faster than a new Mac does. A click on the "smart tv" remote button, and I was in business. The YouTube app connected easily with my iPad, so I was instantly able to play videos I bookmarked. The TV software then remembers the videos you’ve recently played so you can go back to them easily. I’m looking forward to playing with the other networked features and will update the review when I’ve had more experience.

The sound is clear and better than most built in TV speakers. The sound settings give you a limited amount of customization, and I wish it had a bass boost, but otherwise no complaints. I’ve been listening to both music and standard TV programs.

The quality of the picture is what sold me on LG TVs over the other brands when I went to the store to check out the different brands. As a previous fan of high end Sony TVs, this one holds its own in terms of sharpness and detail. If you are wondering if getting full 1080 HD resolution on a 32" TV is worth spending a bit more, it is. Whether you are trying to read movie credits or seeing the details of the net behind home plate, those extra pixels mean a lot.

The "Picture Wizard" makes customizing brightness, contrast and color easy. There is no absolute in picture preferences, so you can set it to what looks good to you. It might have just been an overcast day in Chicago when I was watching the Cubs game, but I turned off the Eco mode because it made the picture look too flat. This TV faces a window with a southern exposure, so maybe I was asking too much of it.

One warning: the 60Hz does mean that there will be blurriness in some very fast moving sports or action films. There was only one time it made a difference when watching baseball, but it should be a consideration if you watch faster moving programs.

Now that I’ve figured out the basics, I might read the manual to see what features I missed, but even if I don’t, this is a great TV.

Pyle DC TV for my RV, November 18, 2010

I was excited to purchase this TV so we could watch DVD’s while camping on 12V with it’s built in DVD player. It also has a tuner so it picked up a few over the air digital channels. We installed it in our RV and went camping the same weekend we received it. The first evening in the campground, we put a DVD in it and the DVD refused to play it. We tried another DVD, same issue. The player was defective. We contacted the factory and they promptly issued an RGA, but it cost me to ship it back to them. I am currently waiting for my replacement. I will give the next one another chance to perform. Unfortunately, we did not even get to play a movie to rate it’s screen.

Extremely Happy,, October 6, 2010

I have numerous LCD TVs but they are all larger than this one. I wanted a 15.6” inch for ease of portability and the ability to take it on trips and to be used in different rooms as needed. Without getting technical, this unit seems to have a very sharp picture, great contrast and brightness, and a easy to use remote. The DVD player is high quality and for a DVD model the price is on believable. and with Removable Base Stand you put it on the wall I’m sure you will be glad you chose this TV…it’s a rarity.

We put this TV in van as a replacement. I didn’t know how to hook it into speaker system, but it’s loud enough for kids to hear. Easy to use and we love it!!!!!!!!!!

good basic tv, October 6, 2011

Good size, good quality.

If you want a basic tv, nothing fancy, just an extra tv for whatever, this is a good buy. I bought one for the garage, because that’s my exercise room and I can play my exercise videos there.

The sound is good and loud, clear. The visual quality is good, I won’t say great, just because well, when you compare it to a 0 tv that’s like a plasma tv or something, it doesn’t compare. BUT that said….for something basic, it’s just perfect.

The dvd works great. I love that I don’t need to plug in anything, just stick the dvd in and and that’s it. It plays automatically.

Very Good, But—, January 19, 2012

I bought this television for my office mainly for four reasons: its size, the built-in DVD player, the claim that it will maintain a constant volume from channel to channel, and the sound equalizer. A reasonable price also helped.

It has met or exceeded expectations in all ways but one. The sound quality is poor–flat and tinny–and the equalizer cannot make the small and cheap internal speakers deliver near enough bass. I fixed the sound problem with a pair of external speakers (also from Amazon)–the Logitech X-140 2.0 speakers connected to the headphone jack on the side of the TV. They make a huge difference. So the total package of TV and speakers cost 1 with no shipping costs. Still not bad.

TV setup was quick and easy and the remote is nicely laid out. I especially like the mute button. Its shape and location make it easy to find even in the dark. I use mute buttons a lot.

Without the external speakers, I give the TV 4 stars. With the speakers, the combo gets 5.

Near Perfection, June 29, 2011

I’ve had this beast of a plasma for about a month now and I am truly still being blown away. Like other reviewers, I was on the fence about Panasonic versus Samsung. I also wanted something OVER 60 inches, and plasma was the way to go to keep costs reasonable. It was either a Panasonic VT65 or GT65 or the Samsung D8000 or D7000. I read countless point and counterpoint discussions on the AVForum site for months…And when I saw a great deal on this 64D8000 I jumped on it and am totally pleased with my choice.

PICTURE: Unbelievable.. Out of the box, it was amazing. Midnight blacks and bright clean whites.. I mean watching the Boston Bruins play in the Stanley Cup was the first thing I saw when I had this on…the black shirts contrasted against the white ice was amazing. Close ups of the Bruins uniforms looked like the TV was powered off on that part of the screen. Really great. Blu-rays of course looked even better. Again the blacks stood out and colors really popped…TRON: Legacy looked UN-believable!!! Just when I thought I’d seen it all, I went into advanced options in the menu and entered a professional calibration result from a tester on AVForum. It took awhile entering in all those R G B settings, but it was totally worth it. (Saved me a couple hundred I’m sure) After my “calibration”, I saw the true power of this Samsung. The colors came alive. And the contrast and flesh tones became more realistic. Blacks were inky (definitely a popular but very true word to describe these blacks) and even darker than before! So, before I thought the picture was amazing, but now it was near perfection! I honestly can’t see how even the wildly popular, overpriced Panasonic VT series can beat this…(according to CNet reviews, they BARELY edge out this tv in picture quality). But you won’t be disappointed with this Samsung. I’m no TV expert but I’ve had lots of HDTVs the last decade, and keep up with the latest. Plasmas aren’t going away anytime soon… This is a big, bright, beautiful beast. Even more beautiful if you calibrate it, or “calibrate” it on your own.

DESIGN: Very nice looking, when turned off. The dark titanium bezel is attractive (darker than the picture shown here on Amazon) with a nice glass edge to give it that classy look. The stand, I agree, is kind of ugly with it’s chrome spider legs..but you gotta hang this thing anyway. This thing is meant to hang on the wall. Its surprisingly thin for a 64-inch plasma. The screen is a bit reflective so it looks nice when it’s off, but plan accordingly if you want this in a room with lots of windows. The reflections will be noticeable. The remote has a nice Qwerty keypad for entering text, and I actually like it’s flip design…although that keypad should light up! It’s useless in the dark. There is an app to use on a smartphone that I have yet to try.

3D: I’ve only watched Directv 3D channels, so I haven’t gotten a lot of 3D experience yet (no Blu-ray 3D yet either even though I’m ready for it). What I have watched is nice. I got two free pairs of battery powered glasses and one rechargeable pair that I paid for extra. The 3D is fun to watch and clear in HD. It is still a gimmick in my book, and I can only watch so much of it before I get annoyed. Bottom line, 3D on this tv looks good (dimmer, but still clear and nice) but I bought this for its 2D picture… 3D is nice to have though, and I’m looking forward to trying out a 3D Blu-ray sometime soon..

SMART TV: Like the 3D feature this is nice. But not necessary in my book. I still use a computer for Internet features and YouTube videos, not my TV. That being said, I think the layout of this Internet connectivity is nice and smooth. Not as smooth as a computer or iPad but it works well enough. And it has built in wifi, so I had to try it out. I was impressed, and I have occasionally gone back to this for sports scores or a YouTube video once in awhile. Samsung has done better than I would have guessed with this “Smart TV” thing…I imagine some people, not myself really, will get a lot of use out of this..

NEGATIVES: okay, so this not perfect. There are a couple things I will point out that people will surely notice. First is the reflective screen. I notice it even in my window-less downstairs room when lights are on and the scene on TV is dark… This TV is meant to be viewed in a darkened room with minimal light. Second, if you’ve read up on plasmas then you’ve heard about “buzzing”. Apparently, Samsung has had buzzing issues before. I tried to notice this right away but couldn’t. Then during a quiet scene of a movie, I sat dead center in front of this tv and happened to turn my head away from the screen and heard it. Now, to be clear, this is not a loud “buzzing” sound and I’m not even complaining about it, but if you are dead center in front of the TV in a quiet scene and you turn your head (directing your ear…

Could not be happier, April 26, 2011

My wife and I just purchased the pn51d8ooo about a week ago from Paul’s TV. I would have bet that we were going to walk out of the store with a led/lcd model. The salesman was extremely helpful with explaining the attributes of the models we were considering. He eventually steered us towards this model for consideration. It seemed strange to me that since they work on commission at this store he would try to sell us on the plasma (less expensive than the comparable led/lcd), it soon became clear that this salesman (Nick)not only knew what he was talking about but wanted us to get the best product for the money. This model is more full featured than anything else out there. It has full web browsing capabilities (yes, that’s right – you can actually surf the net, buy from ebay or Amazon, google anything etc., etc.) There is a built in wireless card unlike all of the others we saw which required you to buy a dongle or other accessory. The picture in the showroom was awesome. Although not as brightly lit as the led models, the colors seemed more natural to me. the blacks were richer (when viewing from an angle the led blacks turned more gray than black). We paid ,069.00 which included the starter 3D kit (two pair of glasses and five 3D movies). The remote is awesome, a standard tv remote on one side but flip it over and you have a full qwerty keyboard and other keys which make internet surfing so much easier. I do have to say that my wife was concerned that we would not like the plasma as much as we would have liked the intense brightness of the led model.
After getting the TV home we took a few days to set it up because we were waiting on a new console stand. I took that time to run a network ethernet cable to the tv location (wired is always faster and more reliable than wireless, but I’m sure that the wireless signal would have worked fine). Set-up was a breeze, stand mounts to tv easily, switching between apps, tv, and internet was very intuitive. We were concerned that we might need to have the tv picture calibrated (as recommended by other stores for 9.00 additional), but were thrilled with the picture right out of the box. There are four picture modes (Dynamic, standard, movie and relax), we are using dynamic which is extremely close to the brightness of the led models. The sound is more than adequate for us. With the wired internet, the set took literally 30 seconds to connect successfully. The netflix problems that I have read in one or two other reviews must have been resolved because I have not had even one glitch. The apps are great but there is a bit of a quirky apps account registration you have to get through. All in all we are extremely happy with our purchase. I haven’t tried the 3D yet but it has full 3D and I’m sure we will love it when more 3D titles are available. Hope this long winded review helps. p.s. We purchased the five year service agreement just to have the peace of mind that it offers, we had a smaller lcd previously that we had to have repaired and it was a bit expensive.

After years of dragging feet, this TV made me JUMP to HD…, April 26, 2011

…although I should thank Amazon Warehouse for first sending me a busted-up 50″ version of last year’s C8000 or I may never have experienced the awesomeness of the 59″ D8000!

The great (and exhaustive) information at AVSFourm lead me to this beauty, which I purchased from BuyDig due to Amazon Warehouse hanging me up on a C8000 replacement, and then Amazon taking forever to get the new 2011 Samsungs into inventory and listed for sale. I’ve got mine paired up with a Samsung BD-D6700 3D Blu-ray Player using AmazonBasics High Speed HDMI Cable. I wall mounted the set with a Sanus Vlt14-B1 Super-Slim Tilt Mount bracket. I’m using Samsung’s SSG-3100GB 3D Glasses that came as part of the Shrek/Megamind 3D Starter Kit, which was included as a promotional item with this set.

Regarding picture quality:
– Simply outstanding. Crisp definition. True colors that aren’t overly bright or artificial. Inky black blacks.
– No ghosting or shadows. Great with fast action and camera panning. Haven’t tried video games.
– No sign of jutter or film effect; the high refresh rate makes any motion smooth and realistic, especially noticeable in-store when comparing this side-by-side with a lower refresh TV.
– Not so hot as a PC monitor with respect to reading tiny text.

If you’re worried about the size possibly being too big:
– I thought I was pushing my luck after my wife commented that the broken 50″ C8000 that showed up at our front door (but was never mounted) looked “too big.” And I’ll admit, this 59″ TV is huge, but once we sat back to enjoy it, I don’t know how we suffered (*cough, cough*) with out 32″ Trinitron tube for the past 14 years.
– With whatever up-convert happens between our DVD player and the TV itself, standard definition movies still look fine on this set. No, they’re not as amazingly crystal clear as high-def Blu-ray content, but they’re not at all blocky as I had expected.
– You will want to take advantage of any HD cable, satellite or over-the-air broadcasts you might have available. Standard definition television picture quality will make you crazy after knowing the cleanliness of HD. (In our case, we’re sticking with Comcast’s most basic service but added their converter box, and are paying them about per month.)
– The VESA mounting pattern on the back is 800mm x 600mm, the largest size the Sanus mount I linked to supports. It’s probably worth checking that whatever mount you select is compatible with this pattern.

3D movies on this set are simply outstanding. So far, I’ve only got the Shrek discs that came with Samsung’s starter kit to view, though I’ve got a couple more on the way. The big screen gives a really perceptible depth effect when viewed from my normal sitting position approximately 10 feet away. But we have a wide room and even from viewing angles of 45

Having owned a small assortment of TVs I am happy to report the Panasonic VT60 trumps anything I have owned and frankly, anything I have ever seen up until this point. This TV produces the most amazing picture I have ever seen! My initial thrill has not worn off. This thing continues to impress me. The pq is absolutely phenomenal, even right out of the box! **Hands-On Review** TV came well packed and assembly of the stand was straightforward and incredibly simple. I do recommend you have a second person to help you. The VT60 is heavy. Initial setup is a breeze and pretty standard. Panasonic walks you through and shows you the included features, emphasizing their different home screen options. Fun fact: there is a silly narrator that sounds like a robot. I weirdly enjoyed it, a bit of 80s/90s nostalgia. I setup mine to go straight to the last source (HDMI) as opposed to my home screen. Also, there is a goofy advertisement that pops up at times. You can however turn it off in the settings. Panasonic includes two remotes. I am not a fan of the smaller remote. I find the touch track pad on it to be cumbersome. Not an issue for me though as I use the included standard size remote. My girlfriend however likes the track pad. To each their own. I’m sure it takes a little getting used to. The apps work as you would expect. I haven’t had a chance to check all of them out, but my time with Youtube and Netflix worked without a hitch. The TV itself looks wonderful. The stand and full glass panel make the TV a true piece of art. The glass itself does pickup glare and reflects light. I have a 7 foot picture window that lets in a ton of light directly opposite of the VT60 but it is not unbearable. I can see the reflection of the window but it is not any worse than previous TVs I have owned. I would argue it is better than my old LG LE8500 which also had a full piece of glass. All this doesn’t matter though as I do most of my watching at night. As I previously mentioned, the picture quality on the VT60 is absolutely stunning! The hype for this set is true. The VT60 delivers on all cylinders. Inky blacks, clean whites, incredibly rich colors, jaw-dropping detail. I’ve been watching in the included THX Cinema modes and haven’t felt the need to make any adjustments. I am no professional calibrator but I would like to make it clear this is the best picture I have ever seen. You can certainly adjust the picture to your personal preference and their is no shortage of access for professional calibration if you wish to do so. As my first plasma, I am thoroughly impressed with the off angle viewing as well. Excellent blacks from any angle and the picture never seems to wash out or lose its integrity. There is certainly no clouding, ghosting, spotlighting, etc. to worry about. If I get unrealistically close to the screen, with my eyeball nearly touching, I can see a bit of dithering which is a function of the plasma technology. It is used to prevent color banding and create a smooth gradient. It is not distracting and I only see it when my eye nearly touches the screen. From far away I do not see it at all. It is not an issue but worth mentioning. I can’t comment on 3D quite yet as I haven’t had a chance view any 3D content. I’ve spent most of my time with blu-rays and streaming HD. I will update my review when I get a chance to sit down with a 3D movie I have added a few photos to the Amazon Customer Images section of Samsara [Blu-ray]on the VT60 . By Saturday night, the PQ quality has achieved a wonderful and delightful look. While watching ShowTime, the ShowTime screen came up where just their trademark was shown on the screen with an all black background. I smiled because it looked just like the OLED screen on my wife’s Nokia phone. All I saw was their trademark. It was just a trademark, but the black was breathtaking because well, it was black. Definitely an edge over the F8500. I wanted to take a pic to share, but I changed the channel instead of pausing, so I could not go back on the DVR dang it. Maybe tonight. Most content types do look very good. Naturally, standard 480i content is just OK. Some better than others. 1080i is pretty good across the board and mostly because I have DirectTV. 1080P via DirectTV is perfect. 1080P playing a BRD from the OPPO likewise is beautiful. I did have to adjust some settings though on the OPPO so achieve the best pic. I don’t really want to play with the VT60 settings just yet. The home screen concept quite frankly is the best attempt at a menu system I have seen on a TV (This is my first Panasonic). You can make your own home screen and have the VT60 start on any you want. Different users can have their own home screen. Very personal computer like and since I develop software all day long on a PC, I am of course going to like this approach. Making a home screen that is “you” is a great idea. I hear no buzzing on this unless I get really close with my ears. It increases slightly on bright scenes, but again, you have to be close. I do have a fan noise issue that from my reading on the Internet, others have posted about over the years with various Panny models. My ears may be more prone to this than others since I work with the computer equipment that I do. I found a filter solution someone else posted they did with their VT50, so I will try that first. I have 30 days to exchange, so plenty of time to try other things. Daylight viewing is pretty good. I think the F8500 has an edge with screen reflections, but the VT60 is close enough. With night time viewing, the VT60 wins hands down. Neither TV is calibrated professionally. I did the F8500 myself with a WOW disc and I did not alter the VT60 at all. 3D: I played LOTR Hobbit today in 3D. I selected this one to comment on since I also seen it in the theater (OmniMax) in 3D. Even in daylight (I did not close the blinds), the 3D was good an strong. Not burry and the light from the windows did not cause too much of a problem. No cross-talk that I could see. The VT60 only comes with 2 pairs of glasses. They fit well and are mostly comfortable. Lastly, the settings options on this VT60 are numerous to say the least. That is obviously a good thing, but it is a little daunting to a novice like me. I have so far settled (like others) on using the THX Cinema which produces a beautiful PQ. Not so much with sports though. Oh, having the power light on while watching the VT60 in the dark is dumb. That little red light needs to go away. I found some tape I am putting over it. If someone knows of a setting for this, let me know please. This is definitely a keeper and definitely a superb PQ. Thank god this happened because after this negative experience with Sony and LCD TV I decided to give a shot at plasma. I knew that Panasonic makes the best plasma TVs out there so I got the Viera TC-P55VT60. I have to stress here that when it comes to picture quality this TV blows Sony Bravia into little pieces! After little calibration with Panasonic iphone app the picture quality is just beautiful, the blacks are truly black, (bravia had a blueish tint to it no matter what I did) horizontal viewing angle is much better then on the bravia too, sound quality as well. All in all it’s just a better quality TV. I think the only negative thing that I coud find so far is the fact that during the day the light coming from my big windows reflects from the glass panel. but I can live with it. The TV is really bright during the day so for the ones that worry about plasma being too dark during the day I say that’s not an issue with this TV at all. I also red somewhere that one guy complained about noise coming from the heat fans on the back of the panel. I notice that the fans make a little noise when tv is muted but it’s not a problem at all when the sound is on, even at low sound level you can’t hear the fans at all. So far I’m really happy with this purchase. Again beautiful TV inside and out. I am very happy with my purchase after 2 weeks of ownership. I am watching it without any custom tweaking at all and blu-ray looks great, and ATSC digital broadcast reception via a RCA ANT1500 Large Multi-Directional Digital Flat Passive Antenna (White) is excellent too. I bought this sight unseen because the price was right and it seemed to have the important stuff and not the frills, which was just what I wanted. Also previous models of the Aquos line got decent reviews. This is my first large LCD so I don’t have much to compare with. The features seem to be just a somewhat more mature version of last years features which is great if you don’t want the dubious advantages (and expense) of things like 240hz mode, LED backlighting or ultra-thin screen. The built-in sound is decent with hidden, downward pointing speakers and I use it for live TV (ie News and Sports) but for movies I have it connected to an AV surround amp. Looks great mounted on the wall (nicer than on the stand). Pros: – 10-bit screen – non-glare screen I have it next to large window and although you can certainly see the light reflected, it is a kind of matte look not a sharp reflection. And the brightness of the screen can overcome whatever reflection there is except in dark scenes. – 120hz mode I really don’t see a lot of difference so I tend to leave things in the regular movie mode, even for baseball – good response time subjective, nothing to compare – good black subjective, nothing to compare – plenty of connections – can custom label the on-screen menu inputs well, it’s important to me Cons: – no PIP I don’t care – no DLNA/Internet connectivity I’m connected to a MediaPC so this would be redundant except for firmware upgrades which have to be done via a USB port (not sure if end user can do that) – the USB port is good only for service, not, for example, loading home pictures – again with a MediaPC it’s not needed. The delivery via Amazon/CEVA was by a couple of very nice guys who brought it in, unpacked it, put it on the stand (which I later removed) and turned it on, which was exactly what I wanted and expected. No dead pixels. 15 month warranty (12 month plus 3 more for registering online) which I hope I don’t have to use. I have successfully connected my Cox HD-DVR, Roku (Netflix device), and Pioneer DVD player (1080p upconvert) to the TV…all with new HDMI cables. Visually this TV looks great, I like the piano black finish and the slight champagne gradiant at the bottom…will look even better once we get it up on our wall I think (wife likes the look too). Upon first powering it up I was greeted with a few simple setup questions all laid out nicely on a very easy to read menu system. Once done I was up and running on our Cox HD-DVR. I went to a basketball game that was on and being broadcast in 1080i. Wow, simply wow. Amazing picture quality…and I hadn’t even tweaked the settings yet. After watching a few more channels I switched over to my son’s Cars (Pixar movie) DVD to check out the 1080p upconvert and the 120Hz dejudder capabilities. I had never really been able to detect the difference of this in big stores, but wow in the Cars movie at home it was very evident and actually looked really cool. The animation was sooo much smoother, it took a little getting used to but now I’m just amazed at it. Some might not like it, but I think most will. SD channels actually look suprsingly ok. Was expecting them to look like total crap on this size TV, but they dont. Later in the evening I started to get down to adjusting the video settings to get the blacks a litter better and the color to be just right (for my eyes anyway). Took about 30-40 mins but I think I have everything set the way I like it, and it looks even better than the initial settings. Blacks are VERY good. For 68 shipped, this is an amazing TV. Sure it doesn’t have some of the newest bells and whistles…but for some of us who don’t have a need for those or the added cost, its nice (ie, ethernet port, USB port, 240Hz, etc). There are only 2 little downsides I have come across: 1) The sound is only so-so, but that was to be expected…most TVs just aren’t spectacular. The sound is very clear, and voices are easy to hear/understand…but just no bass at all. So movies seem a little drab in the sound department. We will be adding a sound bar soon. 2) The viewing angle could be a little better I think. The image gets a little washed as you move to the sides of the TV. I was able to minimize some of it by tweaking the backlight level and contrast/brightness. But still could be better. The stand on this unit swivels though, so we just angle it towards the couch or chairs we will be in and the problem is solved. And, although the receiver was set to “Audio TV Out” off (and even with it on), the TV kept popping up this error: “Incompatible audio signal has been received, please check the output signal.” It only pops up for a few seconds, and only when I would switch devices or resolution or whatever. Still, pretty annoying. Connecting the devices directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error – the only time it didn’t happen is when there was 2ch 44.1/48Khz PCM involved. Unfortunately, unlike every other TV I have ever owned, the Sharp doesn’t have a menu option to disable audio. Muting didn’t help, either. The solution? Set the audio volume to 0. No more error! PROBLEM: NO DEVICE DETECTED (DVI -> HDMI) When I first got this TV, I plugged in my Mac Mini, using a DVI -> HDMI cable. After using it for a bit, the TV would stop recognizing that the Mac Mini was connected. It turns out that, whenever the Mac Mini would be rebooted or would go to sleep, the Sharp would refuse to recognize that it was connected anymore. The solution? Physically unplugging and plugging in the TV (not just pressing the power button), and disabling sleep on the Mac. I still have to do this unplugging dance occasionally – like for system updates – but not as often as when sleep was enabled. I guess that’s the price you pay for a beautiful 1080p HDMI signal, as opposed to a letterboxed 1600×1200 VGA signal – the max this TV supports. CALIBRATION SETTINGS This TV has some definite problems with blues in areas of high contrast. Here are the best settings I have found, in order of their appearance in the menus: OPC: Off Backlight: +6 (you can adjust up or down a smidge if need be) Contrast: +36 Brightness: -6 Color: +1 Tint: +1 Sharpness: -1 CMS Hue/Saturation/Value: 0 Color Temp.: Low (leave at Mid for color managed devices like Macs, or OTA TV) R Gain: +11 G Gain: 0 B Gain: -10 Fine Motion Enhanced: Off (leave on for sports if you prefer) Active Contrast: Off Gamma Adjustment: 0 Film Mode: Off (I used Advanced(Low) for sports) Digital Noise Reduction: Off Monochrome: Off Range of OPC: +16 Max, -16 Min (it is off, anyways) Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you?  >Report abuse | Permalink  Comments (4)

The apps are what make this entire thing so worth while. Before we were streaming video through demand with our blueray player – now you can stream right from the TV, which makes it seamless. You can also watch TV on the side while browsing for a movie to stream. I love the technology. The thin rim on this TV also makes the profile smaller and increases the viewing area. Best 2012 purchase and I didn’t even have to leave the house! The Samsung’s panel died on me about 2 weeks ago after working great since I bought it in May 2011. Luckily, I had purchased a 3 year warranty through Squaretrade and they got my refund to me super quick (highly recommended). I came across this VIZIO and it basically owns the best reviews for a 50 inch LED (now I see why), so after a little research I went for it and I really feel like I hit a home run with this one. Picture Quality: Having previously owned the 43 inch Samsung Plasma, I can definitely say the blacks are nicer on the Samsung, but that’s be supposed to be a strength for a plasma TV. Being an LED, this VIZIO has more than adequate blacks in its display of HD and even standard channels. The overall display of standard channels on this VIZIO have a decent looking picture. HD movies are true 1080p and beautiful. Sound Quality: I think the sound quality of this TV is adequate, not awesome, but adequate. If you’re wanting an impressive home theater experience from an audio standpoint then I think a sound bar or a surround sound system would be the way to go here. Functionality: The TV, out of the box takes about 15 minutes to set up if you’re taking your time. The remote is a little small, but unless you have massive hands it shouldn’t be an issue. When you go to turn on the TV it takes about 15 seconds from when you press the power button to when you see the screen display the picture. Maybe that’s too long for some people, it doesn’t bother me. The Wifi connection process is fast, smooth, and seamless. As far as the Smart TV features go, it’s very non-invasive. Pops up at the press of the big “V” button midway up the remote and it displays the scrollable bar along the bottom of the screen with everything from Netflix & Hulu Plus to YouTube, Twitter, Skype, and Facebook. I know this review has nothing to do with a Squaretrade warranty, but I felt compelled to reiterate that their warranties are so valuable. I bought a 4 year warranty for this TV that cost .99, but I found a 35% off coupon code that made the warranty only after tax. Just thought I’d throw that out there. Overall, I would say if you’re looking to go bigger than the 40 inch range with a HDTV that really delivers in quality and performance without breaking the bank, then this is the TV for you! Te size is great, the minimalist form factor is refreshing and the picture is above average. The weakest point to the unit is definitely the sound. Since the speakers are rear mounted due to the thinness of the unit and minimal form factor, their is something to be desired regarding the sound. This can be remedied with a Vizio sound bar or an equivalent which will pump um the sound and base. But unfortunately that comes with an extra cost. Overall no buyers remorse and very pleased with the value delivered for the price. Cheers! This TV is HUGE compared to most others I considered. I was worried it might not be bright enough during the day but… YES IT IS!!! Color saturation is also much better than most LCD/LED TVs. Richer colors. Not completely flat – but close enough. Plus the price is much much lower than any flat screen this size (if you can find a flat screen this size, that is). Only Sharp (I believe) makes a flat screen near this big but you can see the individual pixels on that. I know because I checked at Best Buy. Once you get past 55″ DLP is the only way to go. The built in speakers aren’t so good, as I expected. For watching movies you’ll want a sound bar and sub woofer. Or hook it up to your old stereo via a D to A converter box. Oh, well, nothing is perfect. But this is close. Plasmas give you great contrast and accurate blacks, but have issues with burn-in, are extremely power hungry, and radiate tons of heat into your living space. LCDs (and LED LCDs) are thin and power efficient, but lack in contrast, producing a dull grey instead of a pure black in dark scenes. They also have issues with fast motion scenes, relying on frame super-sampling and other visual tricks to try and make up for it. Once you get over the fact that DLP sets aren’t thin and easily wall mountable, everything else about these Mitsubishi TVs is amazing. They produce STUNNING color, it will really blow you away with how vibrant and lifelike everything looks. The contrast and black levels will rival even the best plasma sets, like the Pioneer Kuro. Fast motion scenes look look clear and brilliantly smooth. The Plush 1080P upscaling chip does a really good job of upresing any lower resolution sources you plug in. They are also using a matte screen now on the 42 and C12 series, so even in a brightly lit room there are few reflection issues and you get an excellent viewing angle. If you’re looking for the best bang for your TV budget buck, this is it. It gives anyone who spent 3-5x more for an LCD panel of the same size one heck of a run for their money! The guy unboxed it, we set it up turned it on and connected my Satellite box to it on HD channel. Whoa!! Nice. We then placed it on a stand and I hooked up all my stuff, plus a 3D player. My 3D movies came in, I slipped one in(night time out) and WOW! It was awesome 3D at its best. We watched Avatar and like the jungle jumped out at you. Amazing. We did buy the 3D transmitter, 2 3D glasses made for this TV and a couple of 3D movies. Well worth the money. 3/11/2013: Still enjoying this TV. I love it. So far no problems. The Superbowl was amazing to watch on this TV. 5/4/2013 Update: This TV is still holding um beautufully. Color and viewing are still awesome. We love this toy. Basketball is out of this world. My first was a Toshiba DLP, and it was a lamp hog. Then a Toshiba 50 inch plasma, which failed in 3 years, then LG’s first 1080p 60 inch plasma (Still working great), a Mitsubishi 73 inch DLP, (Still working great), and now, the ultimate plunge with this Sharp 80 inch TV. My viewing area for this TV is 12 feet at its closest and 15 at the farthest, and I instantly thought when I turned this monster on, that I should have stayed with the 70 incher. Oh well, it is mine and I am happy with it. For its size, this TV is well made and looks nice. Picture quality is excellent as close as 3 feet, and then as far back as you can go. I also purchased this TV from a major retailer in Texas because Amazon would not take 2 credit cards, and G. E. gave me more 36 months interest free credit at the Texas retailer than they did at Amazon on the store card, so Amazon lost the sale. I also looked for quite awhile at the, the Sharp 70 inch, and the Panasonic 65 inch VT30 Plasma, and I chose this TV for several reasons. Overall for size, quality, and looks, coupled with its truly great picture and excellent blacks. Remember, the better the blacks, the better the color, because black is the number one color in the color scheme. I gave this TV 5 Stars because of its numerous features and control ability with its menus. The picture is also superb, but the Panasonic 65VT30 still has a little better picture quality. LED is rapidly gaining on plasma though. Overall, I love this TV, and I will finally stop looking for awhile, because it is like being in a movie theater every time I turn it on. It also does not have the delay when turned on like the Mitsubishi DLP. The other good thing is when this TV is on all day, it is cool to the touch, where the Panasonic plasma is not. Some settings from the calibration of my set, which I noticed was great out of the box, but it was somewhat to the red side on the tints. My calibration settings are as follows, and this was professionally done, and will help the rest of you get yours close. Mine now rocks! Picture Settings Mode – Standard Back light +8 Contrast + 26 Brightness + 8 Color +5 Tint + 8 to green Sharpness + 5 Advanced C.M.S. Hue Red -1 Yellow – 2 Magenta + 2 C.M.S. Saturation all at 0 C.M.S. Value all at 0 Color Temp all at 0 Active contrast On Gamma – 1 Range of OPC Max +4 Min -2 These settings should get yours into the calibrated ball park, and I have messed with the Sharp line of large TVs for quite awhile, and they are all somewhat to the red side out of the box. I also would not want to ruin a perfect record of Amazon Reviews by giving this TV any less than 5 stars, because I cannot. This TV deserves and has earned all 5 stars in this rating. UPDATE I started having picture problems with mine the next day, and almost sent it back, but I found a loose Monster HDMI cable, and it was also defective. A new monoprice cable for 10 bucks fixed the problem, and the picture is absolutely stunning. So do not trust anything. Always check your cables, and don’t pay those high prices for Monster Cables. They’re not worth the price difference, and are way over priced. Update Mine has been on 8 – 12 hours per day, and it has the most stunning picture over and above even the Panasonic and Lg Plasma. Trouble Free, and Sharp even called to make sure I was happy with the product. I have seen the 3d, and it is good, but I my self would not want to watch 3D all the time, so I am very satisfied with this product, and I would buy another one if I had a place to put it. Read the other reviews, this TV rocks and the picture far exceeds theater quality. I also recommend the DVDO Edge Green to which I own 2. One on my Sharp 80 and one on My LG 60 inch Plasma. The DVDO is a video processor with lots of features that will enhance any picture on any TV and up convert and signal in to 1080p 24Hz, and it really works, plus it automatically switches from the DVR to the next component turned on like a Oppo Blu-ray, or DVD Player or surround sound. The DVDO Edge is the best kept secret in the entire electronic industry. February 5, 2013 UPDATE I am over a year now with this TV, and it has been the most enjoyable purchase I have ever made. I have not had one iota of trouble. The picture is clear, crisp and much better, easier to view, and not over enhanced like my 60 plasma. Honestly, I bought this TV because of its size, and now I realize, Sharp makes one of the finest products out there. It is all in the settings, and keeping the firmware up to date. Wish I had the money, I’d put one in every room, and now, I’d give it 10 stars. As such, I constantly find myself comparing sound systems, displays, and other home entertainment devices with friends, or simply visiting stores or reading articles on the latest releases. When I heard an 80″ full backlit display would be available for under K I was intrigued, when i heard it was a Sharp I was skeptical… Spending some time on AvsForum I couldn’t help but notice all threads had nothing but glowing comments from people and calibrators I place a lot of trust in. I went to a local BestBuy to view it, and was disappointed. However, having worked at CircuitCity in my college years I know all to well you cannot trust what you see in electronic stores as many simply have the contrast and backlight cranked up to the max, or using the dreaded “dynamic store mode”. Luckily I had brought a USB key with some 1080P trailers and some settings from AvsForum to use as a reference. Settings in place, I immediately knew i had found my next set. Seeing the set in the store you realize it is very large, getting it into your house… well that is a feat in itself. Fortunately at just a bit over 120lbs it is not much heavier than the 60″ plasma it replaced, but with nearly double the surface area it is a huge difference in a viewing experience. So onto the good items: Movie Theater Sized viewing at home (Yes, i know projectors are bigger, but for those of us without dedicated theater rooms this works great, even in bright room conditions). Picture quality (with the right settings this set is scary accurate and gorgeous to watch) Easy to mount (with a set this wide you may be concerned about finding a bracket to mount it, but the VESA mount points are industry standards and work well with a variety of mounts) Built in Wifi that works very well on my network Nice codec support on the USB playback. (I have watched many shows/videos/photos from a thumb drive) Understated design (this will vary from person to person, but I like my TVs to not draw attention to themselves when off, although with a set this big that is hard) It has a minimal, no frills frame that i prefer. Very good 60Hz performance while watching sports/fast moving shows. (I am not a fan of artificial refresh rates and keep mine in game mode) Playing PS3 on this set is phenomenal, as is Blu-Ray performance. Cons: Viewing angles at closer distance are limited (this is not a fault of the set, when viewed from an appropriate 10+ feet the viewing angle is quite good) compared to a plasma, but this is true for most non IPS LCD displays. Um… honestly i haven’t found many other faults. Just don’t expect for view from 5 feet away and have the same sharpness as a 40inch, this is made to be seen from a distance away. Overall, this is the greatest set i have owned. Couple of tips: if you want an extended service plan you can buy directly for just a few hundred dollars for a total of 4 years. (This is the best deal I am aware of) Please (for your sake and mine) don’t use dynamic picture mode! Below are my settings (this is designed to be accurate to colors and brightness) but I encourage your to experiment to find your own settings as each set seems to have different Red saturation levels. Game Mode: opc off backlight = 2 Contrast = 26 BRIGHT = 1 COLOR = -5 Tint = 4 Sharp = 0 Hue R 5 Y 1 G -8 C 1 B 3 M -3 Sat R -10 Y 2 G 0 C 0 B 13 M 1 Value R 3 Y 0 G 13 C 0 B 30 M 0 Temp (Low) R 13 Y 0 G -29 C 3 B 0 M -18 Active Contrast = Off Gamma -2 DNR = Off Monocrome Off Range of OPC N/A Happy Viewing!!! The picture is crystal clear and almost looks 3d due to the amazing depth it shows. We looked at it next to the 70″ Aquos as well as other LED TV’s and the Aquos line by far has the sharpest, clearest picture. If you are considering either the 70″ or the 80″ it obviously comes down to economics, but I can tell you the 80″ definitely dwarfs the 70″ when they are next to each other. We wanted a TV that would essentially look like a movie screen in our living room and the 80″ takes up a big part of the wall. If you plan on wall mounting it, I would definitely suggest having a professional doing it based on the weight and the possible need for adding some additional framing to the wall you are mounting this on.
